1. Summary
The Court Scout is a static informational directory. We do not require an account, we do not sell personal data, and we collect only what is needed to keep the site working and to understand, in aggregate, which pages are useful. The two relevant data flows are described below.
2. What we collect
Analytics (Google Tag Manager + Google Analytics 4). When you load a page, our analytics tags receive standard request data — the URL you visited, the referring page, your approximate location (derived from IP), device and browser type, and an analytics identifier stored in your browser. We use this data only in aggregate to understand which pages are useful and to fix navigation problems. We do not attempt to identify individual visitors.
Email correspondence. If you email us (e.g. [email protected]) or submit a court correction through our form, we receive whatever you choose to send us — typically your name, email address, and the details of your submission. We use that information solely to reply to you and to verify and publish the submission.
Server logs. Our static host (currently Cloudflare Pages) keeps short-lived request logs that may include your IP address, the URL you requested, and your user agent string. These logs are used for security and operational debugging.
3. What we don't do
- We do not sell or rent personal data to anyone, ever.
- We do not require an account to read any page on the site.
- We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
- We do not let advertisers or sponsors influence how venues are ranked. Paid placements are labelled "Sponsored" or "Featured" wherever they appear.
4. Cookies
Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to assign an anonymous analytics identifier and to remember a few session attributes. Advertising cookies may also be set as described in section 5. You can block these by using your browser's standard cookie controls, by installing the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, or by browsing in a private/incognito window. Blocking analytics or advertising cookies will not affect your ability to use the site.
5. Advertising and affiliate links
Third-party ads. We use third-party advertising, including Google AdSense, to keep the directory free to read. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to our site and other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices or optout.networkadvertising.org.
- How Google uses data when you use our site is described in Google's partner-sites policy.
Affiliate links. Some pages — chiefly gear guides and paddle reviews — contain affiliate links, including links to Amazon as a participant in the Amazon Associates Program. If you buy through one of those links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate links never change which products we recommend, and they never affect the directory: no venue can pay to be listed, ranked higher, or marked verified.
Sponsored placements. Venues can pay for a Featured listing. Featured placements are always visually marked and carry a disclosure line. They do not alter the ranking of any other venue, and Featured status is never granted to an unverified record.
6. Third-party services
We rely on the following third parties, each of which has its own privacy policy:
- Google — Tag Manager, Analytics 4, AdSense (advertising), Places API (ratings), and Fonts. Google's privacy policy.
- Amazon — affiliate links in gear content via the Amazon Associates Program.
- Cloudflare — static hosting and CDN.
- OpenStreetMap / CARTO — map tiles (when a Google Maps key is not configured).
- Cloudflare Pages Functions + KV — receives our "Suggest an edit / Add a court" submissions and holds them in a verification queue until reviewed.
- Cloudflare Turnstile — privacy-friendly anti-spam check on that submission form (no tracking cookies).
7. Data retention
Analytics data is retained for the default Google Analytics 4 retention period. Email correspondence is retained as long as it is operationally useful and then deleted on a routine schedule. Server logs are retained by our host for a short window (typically days, not months).
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within a reasonable time, and in any event within the period required by applicable law.
EU/UK visitors (GDPR). The lawful basis for analytics is our legitimate interest in operating and improving a free informational service; the lawful basis for processing emails and form submissions is to take steps at your request before, or while, performing the service you asked for (e.g. publishing your correction).
California visitors (CCPA/CPRA). We do not sell personal information as that term is defined under the CCPA.
9. Security
The site is a static build served over HTTPS. We do not store passwords or payment data of any kind. We follow industry-standard practices for the small amount of operational data we do handle, but no internet service can be 100% secure.
10. Changes
We may update this policy. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the current version. Material changes will be reflected here at least seven days before they take effect.
