Bar chart of free pickleball venues as a share of all listed venues in big cities with at least 20 listings: El Paso 92%, San Diego 74%, Seattle 73%, Chicago 73%, San Francisco 72%, San Jose 64%, Dallas 63%, Washington DC 60%, down to Nashville 22%, Oklahoma City 19%, Denver 17%, Fort Worth 14% and Tucson 12%

Raw counts favor the largest cities. The share of a city's venues that are free says more about how its pickleball is organized:

  • Park-system cities (60% free or more): El Paso, San Diego, Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, San Jose, Dallas and Washington DC. Most of their listed venues are city park courts, so the nearest court is usually a free one.
  • Mixed cities (40% to 59%): Austin, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Kansas City, Louisville, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Houston, New York and others. Free courts are easy to find, but much of the volume sits at clubs.
  • Club-led cities (under 25%): Nashville, Oklahoma City, Denver, Fort Worth and Tucson. Free courts exist, but most venues charge.

Albuquerque's Manzano Mesa Pickleball Complex is listed at 33 courts after a recent expansion, which would put it first, but sources disagree on its exact total, so we leave it out of this ranking until the City confirms it.

A big free site is worth the extra drive at peak times: a 2-court neighborhood park fills with one group, while a 16-court complex usually has a rotation going. Our free courts guide explains how first-come rotation and paid reservations work at free sites.

Methodology

  1. Cities are the 40 most populous incorporated places in the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 population estimates. New York City combines our New York, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island records. Venues in suburbs with their own city name are not included.
  2. Venues are open pickleball venues in The Court Scout database (data/courts.json) on 28 October 2026 whose access is free. Verified means confirmed against an official source such as the city parks department (how we verify).
  3. Courts are summed only at verified free venues with a published count at a single site; city-wide "all parks" records are excluded so courts are not double-counted.
  4. Free share is free venues divided by all listed venues in the city (cities with at least 20 listings). It reflects our coverage as well as the city, so treat small differences as noise.
