Where to Play Pickleball in Chicago, Illinois (2026)

A grounded guide to every verified pickleball venue in Chicago — Grant Park's free 16-court outdoor complex, Big City Pickle's four indoor locations, SPF's social clubs, McFetridge, and the full Chicago Park District outdoor network — organised for winter survival and neighborhood find.

Where to Play Pickleball in Chicago, Illinois (2026)

Last reviewed 5 June 2026 against every venue's primary source. We list 43 open and verified pickleball venues in Chicago proper, totalling 202+ confirmed courts. A further 25 Chicago records remain needs-verification while we re-confirm specific field details; they appear on the city page but are not counted here.

Chicago has the most robust pickleball infrastructure of any Midwest city — and one of the most layered in the country. The Chicago Park District (CPD) operates the largest single free outdoor complex in the region at Grant Park (16 courts), plus 30+ additional outdoor sites across all 77 community areas. Meanwhile, a wave of private indoor clubs — Big City Pickle with four inner-ring locations, SPF with three social-club outposts, Pickleball Clubhouse, and McFetridge Sports Center — has made year-round play genuinely viable.

The central tension in Chicago pickleball: the weather. Outdoor courts are playable roughly May through October; November through April is a question of luck and layers. In January, the indoor clubs fill up fast — Big City Pickle's Gold Coast and Fulton Market peak hours sell out by midday Thursday. Knowing this calendar rhythm is half the battle.

Chicago pickleball breaks into four layers:

 1. Free CPD outdoor courts. The Chicago Park District has added dedicated pickleball courts at 30+ sites since 2022. Most are free and walk-on. The flagship — Grant Park — is the city's social hub.
 2. McFetridge Sports Center. The CPD-operated indoor facility at 3843 N California Ave is the best-value indoor option: six courts, an established open-play schedule, and rates far below the private clubs.
 3. The private indoor clubs. Big City Pickle (4 locations, 39 indoor courts), SPF (3 locations, 19 courts), and Pickleball Clubhouse (7 courts) are the city's year-round backbone. Prices range from $16 per person per session (SPF open play) to $70/hr per court peak at Big City Pickle Fulton Market.
 4. Padel venues. Chicago has three confirmed padel clubs — Union Padel Club (West Loop), Proximo Padel (Portage Park), and Cube Padel (Bridgeport) — for players who want the covered-court experience with a European edge.

This is not a "top 10" list. It is a working map of every open verified venue we have, organised by what you're trying to do.

The short answer for each type of player

 • You want to play outdoors right now, for free. Go to Grant Park Pickleball Courts at 820 S Columbus Dr (60602). 16 free outdoor courts with lights until 11 PM, first-come first-served, no permit required. It is the social centre of Chicago pickleball — the place you go to find a game when you don't know anyone.
 • You want air conditioning and a game tonight. Big City Pickle – Fulton Market (170 N Green St, 60642) is the largest single indoor club in the city at 16 courts. SPF Lincoln Park (2121 N Clybourn Ave, 60614) has 9 courts plus a food and coffee bar and runs open play at $16/person for 2 hours. Both are bookable same-day on non-peak weeknights; Friday night and Saturday are advance-book territory.
 • You want value on a weekday morning. McFetridge Sports Center (3843 N California Ave, 60618) is the CPD's indoor option: 6 courts, $25/hr per court for rentals, plus organized open-play sessions at lower per-head rates. It lacks the bar scene but it runs a serious pickleball program with skill-level splits.
 • You want a club with a membership, leagues, and regulars. Big City Pickle offers annual memberships that unlock member rates (typically $10–20/hr less than walk-on), early booking windows, and access to all four locations. SPF is more social in tone — their open-play model (no private court rentals at peak, community-rotation play) suits players who want to meet people rather than bring a group.
 • You're visiting the North Shore for a day. Lake Shore Park Pickleball Courts (808 N Lake Shore Dr, 60611) — 2 free outdoor courts at the lake, steps from the Gold Coast. Bring a net or pair up with whoever's there.
 • You want padel. Union Padel Club (207 N Paulina St, 60612) is Chicago's flagship padel venue — 5 courts, leagues, and social events in the West Loop / Fulton Market corridor.

Free public courts: the Chicago Park District network

The Chicago Park District is the backbone of free pickleball access in Chicago. Since 2022, CPD has built out dedicated pickleball courts in all quadrants of the city — from Rogers Park on the far north to Calumet Park and Foster Park on the far south. Most courts are free and walk-on during park hours (typically dawn–11 PM where lighted). No permit is needed for recreational open play.

Two exceptions: (1) CPD permits are required for organized group events (leagues, tournaments, clubs > 10 people) and must be booked through the CPD permit office at 312-742-3918. (2) Some CPD courts at multi-use facilities (McFetridge, Horner, Jackson Park) have designated open-play times for pickleball — playing outside those windows means sharing with tennis or other users.

The flagship: Grant Park

 • Grant Park Pickleball Courts (820 S Columbus Dr, 60602, Museum Campus) — 16 outdoor lighted courts, free, first-come first-served. Open dawn–11 PM. Funded in part by a $500,000 grant from Lollapalooza. Concrete surface with permanent lines and nets. On-site City Courts Management concession rents paddles and sells equipment, and runs a food and beverage kiosk. Courts fill on weekend mornings by 8 AM in season; weekday evenings under the lights are more approachable. This is the de facto Chicago pickleball social hub — the place to show up solo, find a game, and stay for three hours.

Indoor play: beating the Chicago winter

Chicago's winter (November–March) is the defining constraint for outdoor pickleball. Temperatures below 20°F, lake-effect wind, ice, and snow close most CPD outdoor courts from late November through April. The private indoor clubs are not a luxury in Chicago — they are a necessity for anyone who wants to play year-round. Book ahead: Friday and Saturday nights at every venue listed below fill up by mid-week in winter.

McFetridge Sports Center — the CPD indoor anchor

 • McFetridge Sports Center (3843 N California Ave, 60618) — Irving Park / North Center. Run by the Chicago Park District. 6 dedicated indoor courts — the largest single indoor pickleball-only setup in the CPD system. Court rentals at $25/hr per court; open-play sessions are organised by skill level at lower per-head rates. No membership required. Check the current schedule at mcfetridgesportscenter.com/pickleball — open-play slots vary and are bookable in advance. For a city-operated facility, McFetridge runs an unusually tight program: clinics, beginner sessions, and dedicated skill-bracket open play.

Big City Pickle — Chicago's dominant indoor chain

Big City Pickle operates four dedicated indoor pickleball clubs across the inner ring. All four share the same booking platform, membership structure, and programming; member pricing runs roughly $10–20/hr per court less than non-member rates.

LocationAddressCourtsPeak non-member rate
West Loop113 N Elizabeth St, 606074~$50/session
Fulton Market170 N Green St, 6064216$70/hr per court
Gold Coast302 W Walton St, 606108$60/hr per court
Lincoln Yards1680 N Throop St (no ZIP confirmed)11$40/hr per court

Peak hours are Mon–Fri 4 PM–10:30 PM and Sat–Sun 9 AM–7 PM; off-peak (weekday mornings and Sunday evenings) runs roughly $10–20/hr cheaper. Fulton Market is BCP's flagship: 16 courts, the highest rates, the biggest league and clinic calendar, and the most demand. If you want to walk in on a Friday evening without a reservation, expect a wait. Lincoln Yards — newest and largest-court location — has the best off-peak value in the system.

Memberships unlock: member per-session pricing (~$40/peak at Fulton Market for members vs. $60–70/hr non-member court rental), priority booking windows, and access to leagues and member-only events across all four locations. Check chicagocitypickle.com/membership for current tiers.

SPF (Social Pickleball Fun) — the community-first model

SPF runs a different model from Big City Pickle: open-play rotation rather than private court rental, with a social food-and-drinks layer baked in. You pay per session and rotate partners; there's no private court booking at peak hours. This makes SPF well-suited for solo players and social groups, less suited for people who want to practice with a fixed partner.

 • SPF Lincoln Park (2121 N Clybourn Ave Bldg 1, 60614) — The flagship. 9 indoor courts in a 42,000 sq ft space with a coffee and food bar, locker rooms, saunas, and social events. Open play: $16/person for a 2-hour session (up to 6 players per court, rotating format). Opened January 2024; Chicago's largest indoor pickleball footprint in a single building. Also runs leagues, clinics, and hosted events through Players Sport & Social Group.
 • SPF All Day (Irving Park) (3800 N Milwaukee Ave, 60641) — Irving Park / Old Irving Park. 6 indoor courts. SPF's west-side outpost — closer for the Northwest Side player who doesn't want to make the Lincoln Park trek.
 • SPF Hyde Park (The Sport House) (1301 E 47th St Bldg 1, 60653) — Hyde Park. 4 indoor courts at The Sport House. SPF's South Side anchor, opened 2025. Fills a genuine gap: the South Side has the most CPD outdoor courts per capita (Grand Crossing, Washington Park, Jackson Park, etc.) but had no indoor club option until this opened.

Pickleball Clubhouse

 • Pickleball Clubhouse (4242 N Elston Ave, 60618) — Albany Park / North Center corridor. 7 indoor courts. A dedicated pickleball club (not a multipurpose rec center) with lessons, leagues, and a community atmosphere closer to McFetridge-size than BCP. Strong ratings from members for coaching quality and organization. Check pickleballclub.house for current schedule and rates.

Padel in Chicago

Chicago's padel scene is small but real — three dedicated venues, all in the inner ring, all with 3–5 courts.

 • Union Padel Club (207 N Paulina St, 60612) — West Loop / Near West Side. 5 padel courts, verified. Chicago's best-established padel club, with leagues, social sessions, and clinics. Directly adjacent to the BCP / SPF cluster, so West Loop players can do both.
 • Proximo Padel (3043 N Knox Ave, 60641) — Portage Park / Belmont Cragin. 4 padel courts, verified. Northwest Side option that covers the Portage Park / Irving Park corridor. Check proximopadel.com for court booking.
 • Cube Padel Chicago (3900 S Ashland Ave, 60609) — Bridgeport / McKinley Park. 3 padel courts, currently needs-verification (we have a primary source but haven't confirmed open status in person). Check cubepadel.com before making a trip.

Seasonal notes

May–September: outdoor prime time. CPD courts are in full swing. Grant Park gets crowded by 9 AM on weekends; arrive by 7:30 or plan for a wait. The best weekday slots are 6–9 AM (locals before work) and 5–7 PM (between the after-work rush and the evening league sessions at Grant Park). Weekday mornings at the neighbourhood parks — Horner, Washington Park, Jackson Park — are often light even in peak season.

October: the shoulder month. Reliable weather down to ~50°F, but evening games require layers and the light disappears quickly. The covered padel clubs start filling earlier. Indoor bookings at Big City Pickle climb noticeably after Columbus Day weekend.

November–March: full winter mode. Outdoor play is a function of weather luck. CPD parks are technically "open" when not iced over, but concrete courts in 15°F wind are not what most players consider playable. This is the indoor club season — book Big City Pickle and SPF at least 3–5 days ahead for Friday/Saturday slots. McFetridge, with its CPD backing and deeper court inventory, is slightly easier to walk into. SPF Hyde Park on the South Side tends to be more available than Lincoln Park throughout winter.

April: mud season and the reopening. CPD courts often come back online in waves as CPD does spring maintenance. Grant Park typically reopens reliably in mid-April. Check chicagoparkdistrict.com/facilities/pickleball-courts before driving to a specific outdoor location in early spring.
