Where to Play Pickleball in San Diego, California (2026)

Where to Play Pickleball in San Diego, California (2026)

Last reviewed 10 June 2026 against each venue's primary source. We list 47 open pickleball venues in San Diego proper, from free neighborhood rec-center courts to the USA Pickleball National Championships host site.

San Diego is one of the most privileged outdoor pickleball cities in the country — no altitude penalty, no August heat island, and a parks system that has wired pickleball into more than two dozen community recreation centers across every corner of the city. The spectrum runs from 35 free or low-cost locations (city rec centers, YMCA-affiliated sites, community parks) to Barnes Tennis Center's 19 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts (plus 7 padel courts), the largest private racket-sport complex in Southern California and the venue for the annual USA Pickleball National Championships.

This is not a "top 10" list. It covers all 47 verified open venues organized by what you actually want to do.

The short answer for each type of player

Free city rec-center courts: the backbone of San Diego pickleball

The City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department (San Diego PRD) has embedded pickleball into its recreation center network across all nine council districts. These are free, open-access locations — no booking required at most sites, and no fee. The divide is between indoor multipurpose gyms (free, but scheduled around school breaks) and outdoor permanent or multi-use courts (available year-round, typically first-come first-served).

Balboa Park cluster

The two Balboa Park locations are the most centrally located free courts in the city — walking distance from North Park, Hillcrest, and the Zoo parking area.

The beach-adjacent rec centers are the closest free option for visitors staying on the coast.

Eastern districts: Tierrasanta / Allied Gardens / Kearny Mesa

North City: Mira Mesa / Scripps Ranch / Carmel Valley / Rancho Bernardo

The northernmost city rec centers serve the 92126–92131 zip codes — a rapidly growing player base with well-maintained facilities.

Barnes Tennis Center: the flagship paid venue

Barnes Tennis Center (4490 W Point Loma Blvd, 92107) is the most significant private pickleball facility in San Diego. Located between Ocean Beach and Mission Bay, it features 19 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts — confirmed from the facility's own court inventory ("23 hard courts, 19 pickleball courts, 7 padel courts") — plus 7 dedicated padel courts, making it one of the most complete racket-sport campuses in Southern California.

Barnes hosts major competitive events including Major League Pickleball matches and the USA Pickleball National Championships (typically held in the fall; 2025 Nationals drew thousands of competitors to this site). For non-competitive players, the facility offers daily open play sessions organized by skill level and time slot ($7/session), organized ladders, clinics, and private lessons — no annual membership required for open play. Court rentals are bookable through barnestennis.com.

Barnes is managed by the YMCA of San Diego County under a lease with the City of San Diego, making it a rare hybrid: city-owned land, professionally operated facility, open to the public without a full club membership.

The HUB Pickleball San Diego

The HUB Pickleball San Diego (9545 Campo Rd, Spring Valley, 91977) sits about 15 minutes east of downtown in Spring Valley — not a central location, but it's the city's largest dedicated indoor pickleball club in terms of court count at 26 courts.

The HUB's model is daily unlimited all-day drop-in challenge play — you pay once and can play continuously, working through ladder formats and pickup games throughout the day. The facility also runs weekly ladders, round robins, leagues, and nationally recognized tournament events. Hours: Mon 8 AM–11 PM; Tue–Fri 8 AM–10 PM; Sat 8 AM–8 PM; Sun 8 AM–6 PM.

A note on summer play at the indoor rec centers

San Diego's indoor free courts at Municipal Gymnasium (Morley Field) and the Balboa Park Activity Center are closed during summer and school breaks — the last day of the 2025–2026 school year program was May 28, 2026; the program resumes August 11, 2026. This is the single most important scheduling caveat for summer visitors. The outdoor rec-center courts are unaffected — Pacific Beach, North Park, Allied Gardens, Kearny Mesa, and the full North City network remain open year-round. San Diego's outdoor-friendly climate means this is not a hardship — even in July, early-morning outdoor play at any of the neighborhood rec centers is perfectly comfortable.
