Where to Play Pickleball in San Francisco (2026 Guide)

A neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to 27 verified pickleball venues in San Francisco — from Carl Larsen Playground's 8-court flagship in the Sunset and Angelo Rossi's 9-court complex in the Richmond to DinkSF's 4-court indoor club at the Church of Pickleball in the Upper Haight and Bay Club Gateway's 6 Embarcadero courts.

Where to Play Pickleball in San Francisco (2026 Guide)

Last reviewed 12 June 2026 against every venue's primary source. We list 27 open pickleball venues in San Francisco — all 27 verified. San Francisco has the highest verified-court ratio of any large US city in our directory.

San Francisco's pickleball infrastructure is built almost entirely on the public park system. SF Recreation & Parks operates a dedicated Where to Play Pickleball directory that lists every city-managed location — a level of institutional commitment matched by few US cities of comparable size. What you get: 20+ free outdoor courts spread across every neighborhood, plus an indoor program that runs year-round in the city's recreation-center gymnasiums.

The outdoor flagships are Carl Larsen Playground (Larsen Pickleball Complex, 8 dedicated courts in the Outer Sunset), Angelo J. Rossi Playground (9 courts in the Inner Richmond), and Parkside Square (8 courts, dual-lined on tennis courts). Between them, these three locations offer more dedicated outdoor pickleball surface than most US cities build in a decade. All are free and walk-on.

On the indoor/private side, DinkSF (the Church of Pickleball, 4 courts on Fillmore St) is the social indoor hub, and Bay Club Gateway (6 courts on the Embarcadero) is the premium-membership option.

The one quirk: several outdoor SF courts are lined on tennis courts with portable nets — players need to either bring a net, use an on-site storage box, or play during scheduled open-play hours when nets are set up. The guide notes this for each location.

The short answer for each type of player

You want the flagship free outdoor complex: Carl Larsen Playground (Larsen Pickleball Complex) (850 Vicente St, SF 94116, at 19th Ave & Vicente St in the Outer Sunset). Eight dedicated outdoor courts with permanent nets — the largest purpose-built public pickleball complex in San Francisco, opened December 18, 2023. Free walk-on from 7:30 AM to park close. No reservation needed. No lights, so daytime play only.

You want the most courts in the Richmond/Inner Sunset: Angelo J. Rossi Playground (600 Arguello Blvd, SF 94118). Nine pickleball courts total: two tennis courts dual-lined for pickleball (walk-on, bring your own net) plus a dedicated 4-court area (Courts A–D on tennis court #3) with scheduled open play. Free. Park hours 6am–10pm.

You want indoor social courts with a vibe: DinkSF (554 Fillmore St / Church of Pickleball, SF 94117). Four indoor hard courts in the Upper Haight — San Francisco's only full-time dedicated indoor pickleball club. Drop-in $25/session; membership $175/month (access to ~12 open-plays per month). Open play Mon 5–9pm, Wed 5–9pm, Thu 6–9pm, Sun 2–5:30pm.

You want private-membership courts downtown: Bay Club Gateway (370 Drumm St, SF 94111, Embarcadero). Six outdoor courts — membership required, no drop-in. The only membership-based pickleball facility in the Financial District/Embarcadero corridor.

You want affordable indoor on a budget: Any City rec center with an indoor pickleball program — Glen Park Recreation Center (70 Elk St, 94131), Hamilton Recreation Center (1900 Geary Blvd, 94115), Richmond Recreation Center (251 18th Ave, 94121), Eureka Valley Recreation Center (100 Collingwood St, 94114), or Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center (650 Capitol Ave, 94112). All free or minimal fee. See the Indoor/Rec Center section below for schedules.

You want courts with reservations: Parkside Square (8 courts, via Spotery), Sigmund Stern Grove (4 of 6 courts reservable), Moscone Park (reservable outside open-play windows), and Upper Noe Recreation Center (outdoor reservable via rec.us). All use the sfrecpark.org reservation system or Spotery.

Outdoor parks — The flagships

Carl Larsen Playground (Larsen Pickleball Complex) — Outer Sunset

Address: 850 Vicente St, San Francisco, CA 94116 (at 19th Ave & Vicente St) Courts: 8 dedicated outdoor hard courts with permanent nets Access: Free walk-on, no reservation. Play starts at 7:30 AM. Lights: None — daytime play only Opened: December 18, 2023 (SF Rec & Parks grand opening)

Carl Larsen is San Francisco's flagship public pickleball facility. Eight dedicated courts on an acrylic hard surface, purpose-built for pickleball with permanent nets and no shared lines with tennis. The complex sits inside Larsen Park in the Outer Sunset — a residential neighborhood at the edge of the city that gives the courts a neighborhood-park feel rather than a tournament-facility feel.

Courts are walk-on and free, no permits or reservations required. The 7:30 AM start time is enforced (printed signage per the Rec & Parks opening). No overnight lighting, so on overcast SF days — common in summer — play wraps with the light.

The Outer Sunset location is easily walkable from Irving Street, and street parking on Vicente is generally available on weekday mornings. The 71 and N Judah lines serve the area.

Angelo J. Rossi Playground — Inner Richmond

Address: 600 Arguello Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94118 Courts: 9 total — 2 walk-on dual-lined (bring your own net) + 4-court dedicated block (Courts A–D) with open play and reservations Access: Free; park hours 6am–10pm

Rossi Playground in the Inner Richmond is the second-largest pickleball footprint in the city. The dedicated 4-court block (Courts A–D on tennis court #3) sits behind the pool building along Anza St and offers the most organized play structure on the free courts — scheduled open play plus Spotery reservations. Two additional tennis courts (#1 and #2) are dual-lined for pickleball as walk-on with portable nets (players bring their own, or borrow from the storage box on-site).

Parkside Square — Inner Sunset / West Portal

Address: 28th Ave & Vicente St, San Francisco, CA 94132 Courts: 8 pickleball courts on 4 dual-lined tennis courts Drop-in: Daily 12:30–3:30pm (no reservation needed during this window) Reservations: Via Spotery outside drop-in hours; bring or use on-site net storage Notes: SF's first ADA-accessible playground; free

Parkside Square is directly adjacent to Carl Larsen Park — the two form a single pickleball corridor in the west Sunset. Eight courts with good afternoon light and an established drop-in community.

Practical tips for SF pickleball

Reservation system: Many SF Rec & Park courts now use Spotery or rec.us for reservations. Walk-on access is always available when courts are unbooked. The sfrecpark.org pickleball directory lists which courts are reservable.

Net situation: Some outdoor courts (dual-lined tennis courts) require players to bring or set up portable nets. Courts listed as "dedicated pickleball" have permanent nets. The guide flags this per location above.

Weather: San Francisco's summer fog pattern means foggy mornings (especially in the Sunset) even in July–August. Afternoon burn-off is common; the best outdoor play window is typically 11am–5pm in the western neighborhoods. Winters are mild with more sun — the parks are often busier December through March than in August.

No indoor rec-center summer closures: Unlike San Diego's rec centers (which close for pickleball in summer), SF rec centers run pickleball year-round with seasonal schedule adjustments. Summer 2026 schedules are live at each center's sfrecpark.org facility page.

Getting around: The N Judah and K/T lines serve the Sunset/Parkside courts. BART connects to the Mission, Castro, and Glenn Park centers. Bay Club Gateway is a short walk from Embarcadero BART.
