Where to Play Pickleball in Washington, DC (2026)

A ward-by-ward guide to all 35 verified pickleball venues in Washington DC — the DC DPR free rec-center network, Turkey Thicket's 19 courts, Kraken Kourts & Skates' 14 indoor courts, a growing outdoor-park network, and new paid/university options at Rock Creek Tennis Center, Georgetown, and GWU.

Last reviewed 8 August 2026 against every venue's primary source (data/courts.json, live). We list 35 open and verified pickleball venues across DC, totalling 93+ confirmed courts — up from 24 venues at our last review, as DPR has kept adding standalone outdoor park courts across upper NW and the city has picked up its first university and paid-tennis-center options. A further 9 DC records remain needs-verification (plus one more, East Potomac Racquet Sports, that's both unverified and coming-soon). One additional venue — Krughoff Pickleball Center at Garfield Park, a verified, built 5-court Capitol Hill facility — is coming-soon and not yet open; neither it nor East Potomac is counted in the totals above.

Washington DC has one of the most unusually accessible free public pickleball systems in any major US city. The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has wired pickleball into dozens of recreation centers and standalone outdoor parks spread across all eight wards — and almost every one of them is free to DC residents with a valid ID. The flip side: if you're visiting from out of town and want a private, reservable court experience, options are still thin — Kraken Kourts & Skates remains the only dedicated private venue, though two university facilities and a paid tennis center now offer a guest path in.

DC pickleball breaks into four tiers:

  1. The DPR free indoor rec-center network. 19 verified DPR recreation and community centers with dedicated indoor pickleball, free for DC residents. This is the backbone. Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Ward 5 is the flagship with 19 courts (3 indoor + 16 outdoor) — the largest single DPR site.
  2. Free outdoor parks. A fast-growing tier — 9 standalone DPR park locations (Rose Park, Chevy Chase Playground, Edgewood, Langdon, Friendship Park, Hearst Park, Mitchell Park, Newark Park, Takoma Playground, Volta Park, Jefferson Playground) plus the outdoor Southeast Tennis & Learning Center, all free walk-on or organized-session play.
  3. Paid and university options. Kraken Kourts & Skates (private, 14 indoor courts), Rock Creek Tennis Center (paid, NPS concession), and two university facilities — Georgetown's Yates Field House and GWU's Lerner Health and Wellness Center — that admit accompanied guests for a fee.
  4. Coming soon. Krughoff Pickleball Center at Garfield Park (5 dedicated outdoor courts on Capitol Hill) is verified and built but, as of our last check, not yet open — see the note under Outdoor parks below.

This is not a rankings list. It is a map of every verified open venue, organised by what you are actually trying to do.

The short answer for each type of player

  • You want to play tonight for free, in a rec center. Pick the center closest to you. Turkey Thicket Recreation Center (1100 Michigan Ave NE) is the largest at 19 total courts; Columbia Heights Community Center (1480 Girard St NW) anchors NW DC. Bring your DC government-issued ID — all DPR facilities require it for free access.
  • You want a private court with a group, or you're visiting from out of town. Kraken Kourts & Skates at 514 Rhode Island Ave NE (Bryant Street Market) is DC's only private pickleball club with reservable indoor courts. Fourteen courts plus a skating rink, bar, and food. Drop-in: $10/2 hrs; private court: $15–75/hr. Book online at experiencekraken.com.
  • You're in Georgetown / upper NW and want to play outdoors. Rose Park (2609 Dumbarton St NW) has a lighted outdoor court open 6 AM–10 PM. First-come, first-served; bring a portable net. It's a neighborhood institution.
  • You're a government employee working on the Hill / downtown. Kennedy Recreation Center (1401 7th St NW, Shaw) has 3 indoor courts, Mon–Fri noon–8 PM; Stead Park (1625 P St NW, Dupont Circle) is the Ward 2 option. Both are walkable from Capitol Hill and the core.
  • You're in SE/SW and want indoor play. King-Greenleaf Recreation Center (201 N St SW, Waterfront) has 3 courts (indoor plus outdoor), noon–8 PM weekdays. Arthur Capper Community Center (1000 5th St SE) covers Capitol Hill South / Navy Yard.

The DPR free rec-center network

DC DPR's pickleball program serves 1,500+ participants across the District. Every rec center on the DPR pickleball hub is free to DC residents with a valid government-issued ID (driver's license, DC One Card, or equivalent). Visitors are welcome at many locations but should confirm the fee policy at the front desk — policies vary by center.

Standard DPR rec center hours are Mon–Fri 6 AM–9 PM, Sat 9 AM–5 PM, Sun closed — but pickleball-specific slots rotate around basketball, fitness classes, and other programming. Always confirm the current pickleball schedule at the center before you go; the DPR pickleball hub at dpr.dc.gov/pickleball is the authoritative source.

Upper Northwest (Wards 3–4)

  • Chevy Chase Community Center (5601 Connecticut Ave NW, 20015) — Ward 3. 1 indoor court plus 1 outdoor court (pickleball-specific schedule Mon–Fri 6–9 AM and Tue/Thu 5 PM–sunset, Sat–Sun 6 AM–noon outdoors). The Connecticut Ave corridor's primary DPR option.
  • Palisades Recreation Center (5200 Sherier Place NW, 20016) — Ward 3, off MacArthur Blvd near the Palisades neighborhood. 2 indoor courts plus outdoor pickleball on a tennis court. Quieter and less crowded than central DC options.
  • Emery Heights Recreation Center (5701 Georgia Ave NW, 20011) — Ward 4, Petworth / Manor Park corridor. 3 indoor courts. One of the newest pickleball additions to the DPR system.
  • Riggs-LaSalle Recreation Center (501 Riggs Rd NE, 20011) — Ward 4, near Fort Totten Metro. 2 indoor pickleball courts (count not yet published on DPR hub — confirm on-site or by calling DPR at 202-673-7647).

Columbia Heights / Shaw / Dupont (Wards 1–2)

  • Columbia Heights Community Center (1480 Girard St NW, 20009) — Ward 1, two blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro (Green/Yellow lines). 3 indoor courts. One of the most accessible DPR sites by transit. Mon–Fri 6 AM–9 PM; Sat 9 AM–5 PM.
  • Kennedy Recreation Center (1401 7th St NW, 20001) — Ward 1/2, Shaw neighborhood. 3 indoor courts; weekday hours noon–8 PM and Sat 9 AM–1 PM (shorter than most DPR centers — factor this into your schedule).
  • Stead Park Recreation Center (1625 P St NW, 20036) — Ward 2, Dupont Circle. 1 indoor court. The most central DPR pickleball location — accessible from downtown, Georgetown, and Logan Circle.

Northeast DC (Wards 5–7)

  • Turkey Thicket Recreation Center (1100 Michigan Ave NE, 20017) — Ward 5, Brookland / Michigan Park. The largest DPR pickleball site in DC at 19 total courts: 3 indoor + 16 outdoor. Open Mon–Fri 6 AM–9 PM, Sat 9 AM–5 PM. If you can only go to one DPR location, start here.
  • North Michigan Park Recreation Center (1333 Emerson St NE, 20017) — Ward 5, near Catholic University area. 3 indoor courts. Hours Mon–Fri 9 AM–9 PM; Sat 9 AM–5 PM.
  • Arboretum Community Center (2412 Rand Pl NE, 20002) — Ward 5. 2 indoor courts plus a pickleball-striped tennis court. Weekday hours noon–8 PM; closed weekends.

  • Hillcrest Recreation Center (3100 Denver St SE, 20020) — Ward 7. 3 indoor + 1 outdoor courts per the DPR pickleball hub. Court count not yet individually confirmed on the DPR facility page.

Southeast / Southwest DC (Wards 6–8)

Outdoor parks

This is the tier that's grown the most since our last review. The District's small footprint and rec-center-first strategy used to concentrate investment indoors, but DPR has since wired pickleball into a run of standalone outdoor parks, mostly across upper Northwest — several with organized, coached sessions rather than pure walk-on play. Court surfaces are a mix: dedicated pickleball courts with permanent nets, tennis courts striped for pickleball, and basketball-court blacktop with portable nets you bring yourself.

Georgetown / Ward 2

  • Rose Park Pickleball Courts (2609 Dumbarton St NW, 20007) — 1 outdoor court, lighted, open 6 AM–10 PM. Lines painted on a blacktop surface with a portable net (bring your own). The most popular outdoor walk-on location in the city. First-come, first-served.
  • Volta Park Recreation Center Pickleball (1555 34th St NW, 20007) — 1 outdoor court on a basketball-court surface, no permanent nets (portable nets kept in locked storage). Organized sessions Tue/Thu/Sat 12 PM–3 PM; courts otherwise accessible dawn to dusk.
  • Mitchell Park Pickleball Courts (1801 23rd St NW, 20008) — 1 outdoor court, lines on basketball-court blacktop near the National Cathedral. No permanent nets — bring your own.

Upper Northwest / Ward 3

  • Friendship Park Pickleball Courts (4500 Van Ness St NW, 20016) — 1 outdoor court, pickleball lines painted on tennis court #2. No permanent nets. Dawn to dusk.
  • Hearst Park Pickleball Courts (Idaho & Quebec Sts NW, 20008) — 2 outdoor courts on either side of tennis court #1. Portable nets in locked storage; organized sessions Tue/Thu 9–11:30 AM and Sat 8–10:30 AM through a volunteer site coordinator.
  • Newark Park Pickleball Courts (39th St NW & Newark St NW, 20016) — 3 outdoor courts, the largest standalone-park count in the city after Turkey Thicket. Organized, skill-separated sessions: Tue (3.5+), Thu (advanced beginners), Sat (open play), all 9 AM–noon.

Chevy Chase / Ward 3

  • Chevy Chase Playground Pickleball (5601 Connecticut Ave NW, 20015) — adjacent to the Chevy Chase Community Center. DPR outdoor schedule: Mon–Fri 6–9 AM, Tue/Thu 5 PM–sunset, Sat–Sun 6 AM–noon; general park use outside those windows.

Takoma / Ward 4

  • Takoma Playground Pickleball (300 Van Buren St NW, 20012) — one of only four DPR sites citywide with dedicated courts and permanent nets rather than portable/BYO setups. Dawn to dusk.

Northeast DC / Ward 5

  • Edgewood Recreation Center Pickleball (301 Franklin St NE, 20017) — 1 outdoor court (tennis court #2 striped for pickleball). Mon–Fri 6 AM–9 PM; Sat 9 AM–5 PM.
  • Langdon Park Pickleball Courts (2901 20th St NE, 20018) — pickleball lines on a tennis court surface. No permanent nets — bring a portable one, or coordinate with whoever else is playing. Dawn to dusk.

Southwest / Ward 6

  • Jefferson Playground Pickleball (801 7th St SW, 20024) — one of the same four DPR sites citywide with dedicated courts and permanent nets, near the SW Waterfront/King-Greenleaf area. Dawn to dusk.

Ward 8

Coming soon, not yet open: Krughoff Pickleball Center at Garfield Park (100 Virginia Ave SE) is a built, 5-court dedicated outdoor facility on Capitol Hill — as of the last check against the builder's own site, it was still listed "Coming Summer 2026" and had not yet appeared on DPR's official pickleball page. Not counted in this guide's venue totals until it's confirmed open; check back for an update.

Paid and university options

Kraken Kourts & Skates (514 Rhode Island Ave NE, Washington DC 20002) is the city's only dedicated private pickleball club, and it is a fully realized one: 14 indoor courts, many with private cabanas, a roller-skating rink, a bar with draft beers, cans, wines, and ciders, and a food program — all inside Bryant Street Market, a former Sears warehouse turned entertainment complex in NE DC.

Pricing (as of 2025–2026):

  • Drop-in play: $10 per person / 2 hours (the most accessible entry point)
  • Court rental: $15–$75/hr depending on time of day, day of week, and whether you want a court with a private cabana
  • Monthly membership: $99/month

Hours: Mon–Tue 5 PM–10 PM; Wed–Thu 8 AM–10 PM; Fri–Sat 8 AM–midnight; Sun 8 AM–10 PM.

How it fits the DC market: The DPR rec centers are excellent for casual drop-in play, but they don't offer private court reservations or a social bar environment. Kraken fills that gap. For corporate groups, post-work sessions, birthday parties, or visiting players who want a guaranteed court, Kraken is the answer. Paddle and ball rentals available at the registration counter. Book at experiencekraken.com/bryantstreet.

Rock Creek Tennis Center Pickleball (5220 16th St NW, Ward 4) — closed as of August 2026. The former operator's National Park Service concession contract ended and no new operator or reopening date has been announced; the facility's own site now shows only a closure notice. First-come-first-served public tennis courts elsewhere in Rock Creek Park (Montrose Park, Francis Field) remain open, but they are not part of this listing and do not offer pickleball.

Georgetown and GWU: campus courts, guests welcome (for a fee). Two university athletic facilities now offer pickleball to non-members, which is new for DC:

  • Georgetown University Yates Field House (3901 Yates Rd NW) — basketball courts 1 and 2 convert to pickleball, first-come-first-served. Included with a Georgetown community membership; guests pay $10–15 per visit but must be accompanied by a current member. Hours vary by day (roughly 6 AM–midnight weekdays, shorter on weekends) — check the official facility page before you go.
  • GWU Lerner Health and Wellness Center (2301 G St NW, Foggy Bottom) — pickleball on the 3rd-floor multi-purpose courts (shared with basketball, volleyball, and badminton); paddles and balls check out at the Welcome Desk. Free for GWU students; $60/month for community members living in the 20006 or 20037 zip codes only; $15/day for faculty and staff.

What you need to know about access

The DC resident ID rule. DC DPR facilities are listed as free to DC residents with a valid government-issued ID. In practice, the enforcement varies by center and by day — some DPR locations operate more loosely with visitors on off-peak hours, while others check IDs consistently. If you're visiting DC and want free play, call ahead to the specific center (DPR main line: 202-673-7647). The DPR pickleball hub at dpr.dc.gov/pickleball lists all locations and is updated when programs change.

Transit access. DC's rec center network is well-served by Metro. Turkey Thicket is within walking distance of the Brookland-CUA Metro (Red Line); Columbia Heights is at the Columbia Heights Metro (Green/Yellow); Kennedy RC is near U Street (Green/Yellow) and Shaw-Howard (Green/Yellow); King-Greenleaf is at Waterfront Metro (Green); Deanwood CC is near Deanwood Metro (Orange/Blue/Silver); Rosedale is near Stadium-Armory (Orange/Blue/Silver).

The transient DC challenge. Washington draws a disproportionate share of short-term residents — government staff rotating in for 2-year assignments, consultants, Congressional staffers on recess. If you're new to DC and want a community of regular players, both Turkey Thicket and Columbia Heights run organized open-play sessions where you'll find steady regulars. For more competitive play and league scheduling, Kraken Kourts maintains a community board and partner listing at experiencekraken.com.
