Level guide

Badminton levels explained

Six bands, from first session to national level:

Level 1 — Beginner
You are learning the grip, the serve and how to move to the shuttle.
Level 2 — Improver
You can rally, serve in and get to most mid-court shots, and you know side-by-side defence.
Level 3 — Intermediate (club player)
Reliable forehand clears, consistent serves, a steady smash and you understand doubles rotation.
Level 4 — Upper intermediate (league player)
Full overhead control from the back, a tight low serve, spinning net shots, steep smashes and smooth doubles rotation.
Level 5 — Advanced (county / regional)
Backhand clear to the back, an attacking serve game, a jump smash with a follow-up and footwork that holds up under pressure.
Level 6 — National
You compete at national level, with a complete game in every corner of the court.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official badminton rating scale?

Not one that players self-rate against worldwide. BWF world rankings are earned from tournament points, national associations run their own grading or ranking systems, and clubs often just say beginner, intermediate or advanced. This calculator uses six plain-English bands so you can pick the right session or tournament category.

What level is an intermediate badminton player?

Here, level 3: reliable forehand clears to the back of the court, consistent low and high serves, a steady smash and an understanding of doubles rotation. Level 4 adds round-the-head shots, a tight low serve and smooth rotation.

What should I work on to improve fastest?

Footwork and the clear. Getting behind the shuttle early and clearing to the back of the court reliably open up every other shot. After that, a tight low serve makes the biggest difference in doubles.

Which tournament category should I enter?

As a rough guide, levels 1–2 suit social or novice events, level 3 club or intermediate categories, level 4 league and open club tournaments, and 5–6 graded or ranking tournaments. Check the organiser’s category descriptions too.
