Where to Play Pickleball in Evanston, Illinois (2026)

Every verified place to play pickleball in Evanston, Illinois — the City of Evanston's five free outdoor park sites anchored by the new 15-court James Park complex, four city-run indoor community and senior centers, and the private/membership options at Life Time, the McGaw YMCA, and Palmhouse, with honest notes on what's still unconfirmed.

Where to Play Pickleball in Evanston, Illinois (2026)

Last reviewed 16 July 2026 against every venue's primary source. We list 13 open pickleball venues in Evanston, IL — 10 verified, 3 at needs-verification — totalling at least 36 confirmed courts across the venues that publish a count.

Evanston runs its own pickleball program, and that's the first thing worth knowing if you're used to Chicago's system just south of the city line. The City of Evanston Parks, Recreation & Community Services (PRCS) department — not the Chicago Park District — maintains every free outdoor court and every city-run indoor drop-in session here, all listed on one page: cityofevanston.org's tennis/pickleball facility list. Evanston is its own municipality — home to Northwestern University and roughly 78,000 residents on the Lake Michigan shoreline directly north of Chicago's Rogers Park — with its own parks budget, its own phone line for court questions ((847) 448-4311), and its own court network that doesn't show up on any Chicago-focused list.

That network is compact but real: five free outdoor park sites, a shared-use school court, four indoor community and senior centers where pickleball is booked or dropped into around other programming, and three privately run indoor options — a Life Time athletic club, the McGaw YMCA, and a dedicated pickleball venue called Palmhouse on the Howard Street corridor that forms Evanston's literal border with Chicago. There is no 15-court private megaclub here and no single flagship free complex on the scale of Chicago's Grant Park — but there is, as of this year, a genuinely new anchor: James Park, which held its pickleball grand opening in April 2026 and is now the largest dedicated pickleball site in the city at 15 courts.

This guide is not a ranked "best of" list — Evanston doesn't yet have enough venues with published Google ratings to support a merit-based ranking under our ratings policy, and we don't fake one. It's a working map of every open, verified (or honestly flagged as unverified) venue we have, organized by what you're trying to do.

The short answer for each type of player

  • You want the biggest free outdoor complex in the city. James Park Pickleball Courts (300 Dodge Ave, 60202) — 15 free outdoor courts with permanent nets, lighted daily 7am–10pm, first-come-first-served. Held its grand opening in April 2026 and is now Evanston's clear pickleball hub.
  • You want a quieter neighborhood court and don't mind bringing a net. Lovelace Park (2740 Gross Point Rd, 60201) has 6 free outdoor courts — the second-largest free site in the city, in the northwest end of town.
  • You want free indoor drop-in play without a club membership. Robert Crown Community Center (1801 Main St, 60202) runs six drop-in indoor courts for $5/person on a Mon/Wed/Fri afternoon and Tue/Thu evening schedule.
  • You want a reservable indoor court for a group and don't have a membership. Chandler-Newberger Community Center (1028 Central St, 60201) rents courts at $20/hr for up to 5 people, or offers $5 open-gym drop-in.
  • You're a senior looking for a daytime game. Levy Senior Center (304 Dodge Ave, 60202) runs $5 open play Mon/Wed midday and Sun afternoon, plus member-only weekday sessions.
  • You already have a Life Time membership. Life Time Evanston (1618 Sherman Ave, 60201) offers indoor pickleball daily, booked through the Life Time app — early mornings (4am weekdays) through late evening.
  • You're near the Chicago border and want a dedicated private venue. Palmhouse (619 Howard St, 60202) is a reservation-based indoor pickleball venue right on the Chicago/Evanston line — details are still filling in, see the needs-verification section below before making a special trip.

Free outdoor: the City of Evanston's park network <a id="outdoor"></a>

All five outdoor sites below are confirmed on the City's own tennis/pickleball page, free and first-come-first-served, with the same optional twist that doesn't exist on Chicago's free courts just south of here: every one of these free courts can also be reserved for $20/hr (resident rate) if you'd rather lock in a time than hope for an open court.

Mason Park1616 Florence Ave, 602012Not specifiedDaily 7am–9pm

That's 27 confirmed free outdoor courts across five sites — a fraction of Chicago's 200-plus-court CPD network next door, but genuinely dense for a city Evanston's size, and every court is within a short drive or bike ride of anywhere in town.

James Park is the story here. At 300 Dodge Ave in south Evanston, it opened with 15 permanent-net, lighted courts and a public celebration covered by the Daily Northwestern in April 2026 — by far the largest single pickleball build the city has done. Lights run until 10pm, matching Fitzsimmons Park as the only other lit site; the other three parks close at 9pm with no confirmed lighting, so plan on daylight play there.

Only James Park's listing explicitly confirms permanent nets. The other four don't state a net policy either way on the City's page, so bringing your own is the safe move if you're heading to Lovelace, Cartwright, Fitzsimmons, or Mason and want to guarantee a game.

One more free-play option worth knowing about: Dawes Elementary School (440 Dodge Ave, 60202) is listed by the City as part of its shared school-site courts program — bring your own net, and see the needs-verification section below, since we haven't confirmed a court count there yet.

Indoor drop-in: city-run community and senior centers <a id="indoor-city"></a>

Beyond the outdoor parks, Evanston's PRCS department runs pickleball at four indoor facilities — community centers and a senior center — each with its own access model rather than one shared schedule.

Robert Crown Community Center (1801 Main St, 60202) is the largest of the four: six drop-in indoor courts per the City's own pickleball page ("six courts will be provided for play," capped at 32 participants), open Mon/Wed/Fri afternoons and Tue/Thu evenings for $5/person. The gym can also be booked as a half-court rental accommodating up to three courts for smaller private groups. Phone: (847) 448-4311. Check cityofevanston.org's Robert Crown pickleball page for the current Open Gym Schedule with specific times.

Chandler-Newberger Community Center (1028 Central St, 60201) offers 3 indoor hard courts, primarily as a paid rental ($20/court/hr for up to 5 people, paddles and balls provided) rather than pure drop-in, with a $5 open-gym option also available. Phone: (847) 448-8252. Good option if you want to lock in a court for a specific group rather than compete for gym space.

Levy Senior Center (304 Dodge Ave, 60202) runs indoor drop-in pickleball on two tracks: open to anyone for $5/person Mon/Wed 12–3pm and Sun 1–3pm, and members-only sessions Tue/Thu/Fri 2:30–4:30pm. Court count isn't published on the City's page. Phone: (847) 448-8283.

Prieto Community Center (430 Asbury Ave, 60202) — the Dr. Jorge and Luz Maria Prieto Community Center, formerly the South End Community Center — offers indoor pickleball court rentals per the City's pickleball-at-south-end page, but hours, fees, and court count aren't published yet. Confirmed to exist; details still to come.

Private and membership clubs <a id="private"></a>

Three more Evanston venues offer pickleball outside the city system, ranging from a fully verified national chain to two that still need direct confirmation.

Life Time Evanston (1618 Sherman Ave, 60201) is a Life Time athletic club with dedicated indoor pickleball hours confirmed on the official site: Mon–Fri 4am–11pm, Sat–Sun 5am–9pm. Court reservations go through the Life Time app, and access requires a club membership. Court count isn't published. Phone: (847) 448-9700.

McGaw YMCA (1000 Grove Street, 60201) lists a pickleball program on its own site, but we haven't first-party confirmed hours, cost, or court count yet — see the needs-verification section below.

Palmhouse (619 Howard St, 60202) is a private, reservation-based indoor pickleball venue sitting almost exactly on Howard Street — the road that forms the Chicago/Evanston city line — putting it in reach of players from both sides of the border. It's confirmed to exist and to operate via its own site and Facebook page, but court count, hours, and pricing aren't confirmed yet.

What still needs verification <a id="needs-verification"></a>

Being straight about the gaps: 3 of Evanston's 13 open pickleball records are currently at needs-verification.

  • McGaw YMCA — a pickleball program is listed on the YMCA's own site, but hours, cost, phone, and court count haven't been independently confirmed against a primary source beyond that listing.
  • Palmhouse — confirmed to exist as a private indoor pickleball venue via its own website and Facebook page, but court count and hours were left conservative rather than guessed at.
  • Dawes Elementary School — listed by the City as a shared tennis/pickleball court site (bring your own net), but court count hasn't been confirmed first-party.

None of this changes where you can show up and play — every venue above is confirmed to exist and to offer pickleball. It just means don't assume a specific court count or fee at these three until they clear to verified.

Practical notes for Evanston players <a id="practical"></a>

Evanston runs its own system — not Chicago's. If you're cross-shopping with the city just south of the border, see our separate Chicago pickleball guide. The two programs don't share a court, a website, or a phone line, and Evanston's is smaller and built around neighborhood parks plus a handful of city-run indoor facilities rather than a large private-club scene.

Every free court also has a paid reservation option. Unlike Chicago's CPD courts, all five of Evanston's outdoor park sites list an optional $20/hr resident reservation rate alongside free first-come-first-served play — useful if you want to guarantee a slot rather than show up and hope.

James Park is new — expect it to be the busiest. As the newest and largest free site (15 courts, opened April 2026), it's likely to draw players from across the city, including from neighboring parts of Chicago. The four smaller park sites (Lovelace, Cartwright, Fitzsimmons, Mason) are worth trying if James Park is full.

No ranked "best of" list yet. Evanston doesn't currently have enough venues with published Google ratings to support a merit-based "Best pickleball in Evanston" ranking under our ratings policy — that page will follow once enough venues clear the ratings threshold.

Bring a net unless you're headed to James Park. James Park is the only outdoor site that explicitly confirms permanent nets on the City's page; Lovelace, Cartwright, Fitzsimmons, and Mason don't state a net policy either way.

Template: city-guide (same as the Chicago and Rockville guides). Uses target_path and canonical_city_page from front matter; no canonical_best_page yet since Evanston doesn't have Google-ratings coverage sufficient for a merit-based "Best" page.

Data note: 3 of 13 Evanston records are at needs-verification (McGaw YMCA, Palmhouse, Dawes Elementary School). Several verified records (Levy Senior Center, Prieto Community Center, Life Time Evanston, McGaw YMCA) have unpublished court counts — the guide flags this explicitly rather than presenting a number as certain. Robert Crown's record carries an internal courts_label field ("3 indoor courts") that is stale relative to the corrected court_count (6, confirmed against the official page's "six courts will be provided for play" language); this guide uses the corrected figure of 6 throughout and the Verifier should reconcile the stale label field.

Link convention: All venue names link to their court page on thecourtscout.com using root-relative paths (/pickleball/united-states/illinois/evanston/<id>/), matching each record's real id field in data/courts.json, confirmed via courtPathAbs() in build.js.
