Short answer: About a third of US pickleball venues have indoor courts. Of the 4,982 verified venues in The Court Scout directory, 1,775 (36%) are indoor or have indoor courts, and across the whole directory we list 5,151 venues with indoor play. The share runs from 58% in Pennsylvania to 23% in Florida and 1% in Hawaii. In winter, your best bets are rec-center gym sessions (a median $5 per visit) and indoor clubs (a median $30 an hour per court).
When outdoor courts get cold, wet or dark at 5 pm, the game moves inside. This guide shows where indoor courts are concentrated, which cities have the most, and how to play inside without overpaying. Figures are from our verified venue records as of 28 October 2026.
Indoor share by state
The top of the list is mostly cold-winter states: Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Michigan, Kansas, Colorado and New York all have indoor courts at 46% or more of their verified venues. Two things complicate the simple "cold state, more indoor" story:
- Heat drives indoor play too. Texas (42%), Oklahoma (45%) and Alabama (42%) rank high because indoor courts are the escape from summer heat as much as winter cold. Our summer heat guide covers that side.
- Some cold states have huge park systems. Minnesota (26%) and Wisconsin (29%) sit low partly because so many of their verified venues are outdoor park courts. Minnesota still has 35 verified indoor venues and Wisconsin 32.

Houston leads with 36 indoor venues, and its verified indoor clubs have 131 courts between them. Our Houston guide explains which of them are clubs, which are city rec centers with set open-play hours, and what each costs. Omaha and Lincoln both make the top 11, a lot of indoor pickleball for two mid-size Nebraska cities. New York's 20 indoor listings in the "New York" city record are not yet verified; the borough pages (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens) are where most verified New York City venues are listed.
Two ways to play indoors
1. Rec-center gym sessions. 874 of the 1,775 verified indoor venues (49%) are recreation or community centers. Expect gym courts, often shared with basketball, a median of 3 courts, and scheduled open-play windows rather than all-day access. The median drop-in price at the 210 indoor rec centers that publish one is $5. The catch is the schedule: sessions are a few hours a few days a week, and they fill early in winter.
2. Indoor pickleball clubs. 739 verified indoor venues are clubs, with a median of 9 courts. You can book a court at almost any hour and many run open play several times a day, but you pay for it: a median $30 an hour per court at the 144 indoor clubs that publish a rate, plus memberships if you play often. Our club chains study covers The Picklr, Pickleball Kingdom, Ace and Dill Dinkers, which run a quarter of all indoor clubs.
Split four ways for doubles, a $30 court is $7.50 each for the hour, less than the $12 median club open-play fee. For a regular group, booking a court together is often cheaper than four separate drop-ins.
Winter tips
- Book early in the week. Indoor courts are scarce on winter evenings, and many clubs open reservations several days ahead.
- Learn your rec center's schedule. City open play is the cheapest indoor option, and the schedule is published on the venue page and the city's own site.
- Bring indoor shoes and an indoor ball. Gym floors mark easily, and indoor balls (fewer, larger holes) play better inside. See our indoor shoe guide and ball types explained.
- Consider late or early slots. 63 venues offer 24-hour pickleball, mostly through app-entry clubs, and off-peak court rates are lower.
- Check if outdoor is still an option. In the South and Southwest, outdoor courts stay playable most of the winter, and half of all verified venues are free.

Methodology
- Source. The Court Scout venue database (
data/courts.json), open US pickleball venues, 28 October 2026. "Indoor" means a venue listed as indoor or as having both indoor and outdoor courts. - State shares use verified venues only (details confirmed against the venue's own site, an official parks page or its Google Business Profile, see how we verify), and only states with at least 40 verified venues.
- City counts use every open listed venue, because that is what each city's indoor page shows; the verified column says how many are confirmed. Courts are summed only where a verified venue publishes a count.
- Prices are the lowest published rate per venue, parsed from each venue's cost line; see our pickleball cost study for the full method.
